Abstract
Every human being perceives his personal identity over time through intuitive knowledge, in a way that leaves no room for denial. Materialist philosophers have tried to provide a constitutive criterion for human personal identity, but due to the constant changes in the human body, they have failed to accomplish that. Similarly, the Descartes’ theory of “Essential Dualism” has not been convincing to scholars because of its various challenges. Meanwhile the followers of the transcendent philosophy tradition have offered solutions grounded in the abstraction of the soul in Islamic philosophy, based on the theory of the physical occurrence of the soul and the intensifying motion in substance of the soul as proposed by Mulla Sadra. Some have posited the connective unity of the hypothetical components of the motion in substance of the soul, others believe that the perfections of previous stages retrain within their ultimate differentia, and yet others have attempted to present more reasonable solutions for proving personal identity by proposing a non-extended motion in substance of the soul. This article uses a descriptive-analytical method to explain these theories.
